Unsudden Death

flickering memories, once pretty
now senesce in autumn
golden-red skies
listen to winds flit by
through dry wheat stalks
chittering insects
smell the sweet dryness of soil
and Prairie desolation
featureless plains
somewhere, over there, I think
i saw something crawling
in the familiar earth
i conjure up memories
of a powerful Matriarch
a benevolent teacher
yes, it was the first toil, the hunt
of labouring & learning
that she cherished
may i touch your cool cheek
before darkness settles?
memory set on eternity
